Flying Island is the Online Literary Journal of the Indiana Writers Center accepting submissions from Midwest residents and those with significant ties to the Midwest.

  • Fiction: up to 5,000 words
  • Nonfiction: up to 3,500 words
  • Poetry: up to three poems, no more than fifty lines each.

Flying Island publishes an online edition of new pieces of poetry and prose on the last Friday of every month.

Flying Island nominates for the Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net.

Submissions are only accepted through Submittable. Submissions mailed or emailed to the center are not eligible for publication and will not be returned.


Submit up to 3,500 words of previously unpublished nonfiction, creative nonfiction, or memoir. Please use 12-point font, and double space your work.

Submit up to three previously unpublished poems, each no longer than 50 lines.

Submit up to 3,000 words of previously unpublished fiction. Please use 12-point font, and double space your work.
